Meaning & History

Keleya is a character in "Sundiata", an epic of old Mali. Keleya was known as the best cook in the Sosso Kingdom in the 11th-12th Century.

The feared dictator of the land Sumanguru Kante, took Keleya as his wife, though she and his nephew Fakoli were already married. As a result, Fakoli, in his vengeance, took flight to the kingdom of Sankarani (current day Segu), and worked together with Sundiata Keita to create an army to defeat his uncle Sumanguru. This unfolding of events would later liberate Sundiata’s father’s land of Mandé.
