Meaning & History
Means "universal", apparently taken from the Greek title of the Virgin Mary Παναγιά Καθολική (Panagia Katholike) (see also Panagiotis). This is a Greek vocabulary word, derived from the phrase καθ' ὅλου (kath' holou) "on the whole, in general, generally", from κατά (kata) "about, according to" combined with the genitive of ὅλος (holos) "whole".
