Meaning & History
Modern German name of uncertain origin.
As a masculine name it has been suggested to be a modern German variant transcription of the Arabic name Younes and Yunus. Also a connection with the Roman name Junius has been debated, as well as a borrowing of the Old Swedish name Junis.
As a feminine name it is almost certainly a variant of Junia, altered along the lines of Lovis. (In some rare cases it might be intended to reflect the English pronunciation of Eunice, of which it is a homophone)
