From jumbo, an adjective to describe something that is especially large or powerful, derived from the name of a large African elephant from East Africa that was purchased by American showman P. T. Barnum in 1882 for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It is more often used as a nickname, most notably among early Major League Baseball players, e.g. pitcher George Washington "Jumbo" McGinnis (circa 1850s–1934).
