I like this name. I see others saying it‘s "too" common, but I have never met a Joseph neither has anyone I know. It‘s not rare but not too common either.
Joseph is a fantastic, strong name. It's one of the long-standing Biblical names that still feels fresh because of the 'J' and its classic-but-not-stuffy sound. It also breaks down into great and cool nicknames: J, Joe, Joey. Works for every age.BUT I do feel like the name itself is bit underrated.
Classic, can't go wrong with Joseph.
What is particularly nice about the name Joseph is that I see it as an “open canvas” moniker. Meaning that it is an enduring classic that’s timeless in use and never dated. A name fitting countless generations of boys who grow into adulthood. Another nice aspect for this name is that a child who goes by this name will never feel pressured by any expectation as it is generally free of connotative associations. A Joseph can be a world famous chef to an established CEO or physician in one swoop. You also have some nice nicknames for informal gatherings such as Joe, Joey or Jojo. What’s not to like there? All in all, a very nice name that one can appreciate over and over again.
Regardless of the fact that this name is religious and the story is fictional and historically disregarded, it must be admitted that the religious book introduces Yusuf (Joseph) as a character who can be a good moral model for many of us in modern time. He goes through the stages of success one after the other and after being oppressed, he abandons the vengeful character that every human has by nature, forgives the culprits and wrongdoers and oppressors. Although a fictional character, he has morals, philanthropic and appropriate behavior, knowledge and understanding, beyond his contemporaries. Perhaps the most interesting prophet introduced by the 3 Abrahamic religions (personal opinion). I also think the name sounds alright. If you're a religious believer in the Abrahamic world of religions and want a religious name on your kid, it's one of the best names you might need.
I love the name because there's a bunch of nicknames for it!
Joseph "Joe" Hahn is an American musician, DJ, director, and visual artist best known as the DJ and creative director of the American rock band Linkin Park, doing the scratching, turntables, sampling, and programming for all seven of Linkin Park's albums. Hahn, along with bandmate Mike Shinoda, are responsible for most of Linkin Park's album artwork. Hahn also directed many of the band's music videos.
I like that this name can be formal: Joseph
It can be cute and fun: Joey
It can be casual and social: Joe
It is also very cool: Joe Cool and G.I. Joe (even Barbie chose him over Ken)It is an amazing every guy name.
My middle name is Joseph, and is personally my favorite biblical boy name! Also, I LOVE Jesus.
I think of Joseph as a classic name that requires no further introduction from my point of view. It is timeless without being too vintage that one might see it as a complete trend that is here today and gone tomorrow. I would also like to point out that it is an intergenerational moniker. One can imagine a small child having this name all the way to a senior citizen, albeit, the use of it would probably be applied to “Joey” for the former and “Joe” for the latter. Either way it is essentially, in my humble opinion, a win-win situation.
This is the INFINITELY better version of Joe.
Amazing!
Nice name.
Absolutely horrible, sounds dumb.
Suuuuuuch a sexy name.
We went with Joseph Daniel James. I insisted he be called Joseph, but as he grows, his coaches call him Joe, which I kind of love now. It was a family name on both sides. He could've gone by JD, JoDanny, Joey, etc. Timeless, strong, commands respect.
For those that don’t like this name just YouTube Joseph Joestar…one of the most badass dudes around… Oh, and I love this name, it has good vibes about it and with the meaning of the name ‘He will add’ shows the positiveness within the name.
I don’t like it, sounds old and hideous.
Probably my least favorite Biblical name. It looks and sounds so ugly.
There are way too many Joe’s in the world. It will always sound like a 40-50 year old man even when the child is young.
I think Joseph is a great name with a nice meaning and beautiful biblical associations. Also, I love the sweet potential nicknames, Joe and Joey.
This is just such a wonderful name.
Such a handsome and modest name. It has such a beautiful sound and has so many international alternatives; José, Giuseppe, Josef, Yusuf,
Pep, Bepe etc. Also I love how the name has so many different shortened versions; Joe, Joey, Jos / Joss, Seph, Zeph and I’ve even heard of a Shep.
This is a classic and handsome name. Go for it!
Handsome and nice. I like the nickname Joe.
Despise! Also, it makes me think of the old, rude, disgusting, unattractive Joseph from Wuthering Heights.
I think that Joseph is a name that never really gets dated. Its main appeal derives from the idea that it is not a type cast trendy moniker. Instead, it has a staying power that crosses generations.
Boring and overused.
I will probably use this as a middle name for a son one day considering it is my maiden name. The name Joseph is starting to somewhat grow on me.
Very handsome.
This is ra eally great name! Classic look, strong sound, still as popular as many decades ago and keep going strong. One of the best male names. Joseph has a lot of quality!
This is my real name and I like it, though I have hoarded a lot of unrelated nicknames.
Like this name. I can imagine it on all ages. This is Joe Biden's real name.
Classic name common in all strands of Christianity (Catholic, Anglican, Others etc) - it's also internationally recognised and the name Joe is reliable - 6.5/10.
My grandfather's name. Quite suitable for old grandfathers.
No. Joseph is unusable, thanks to Joseph Stalin. Just use José or Joey.
It's okay. Joey is a nice nickname.
This name is hot, not gonna lie.
My friend from 7th grade was named Joseph. He went by Joey at first, then switched to Joe. Everyone just called him Joe because no one could pronounce his last name.
Not bad, it's strong and classic, popular for hundreds of years.
Joseph is a universal amazing, classic, handsome name. Fit for a king. You find Joseph all over the world in many cultures and throughout history. The nickname Joe is friendly, approachable, an American classic.
I used to love this name, but now I don't care for it. I don't like the "Joey" nickname. It's a very nice name though.
It is an okay name but it isn't one of my favourites. It is also quite popular so I wouldn't use it. The only thing going for it is that it is classic and reliable and won't lead to bullying, I would possibly use it as a middle name though.
Lovely name. Joseph Stalin is the last person I think of when I hear his name—St. Joseph usually comes to mind first, one of the most honored saints in the Catholic Church. Then, I usually think of my Dad, even though this is his middle name. I think of a lot more kind and amazing people before I think of the monster that was Joseph Stalin.
It’s not a bad name.
A very handsome and classic name for a boy! I don't associate it with Stalin.
It's odd that the ratings for this name are split down the middle almost perfectly.
May all of Stalin's victims rest in peace, but you shouldn't associate this name only with Stalin, because it doesn't matter if you have the same name with a dictator or not - it doesn't mean you will be a bad person if you share your name with a dictator. There are many very nice and good people named Joseph and the same is with Adolfs, Vladimirs, Franciscos, Leopolds, Roberts, Fidels etc.
Joseph is a dictator's name but many others like Vladimir, Adolf, Robert, Raul, Fidel, Franciso, Humberto, Hugo and others are too. None of these names are ruined just because of one person and all these names are completely normal. Ruined names aren't real guys.
Very common but not that bad and I don't think Stalin ruins this name. He was evil but every name has some evil associations so I think it doesn't ruin this name.
Very nice name.
It doesn't matter if Stalin aided WW2 or not, it doesn't change the fact he is responsible for countless deaths and unimaginable violence and war crimes. He is a mass murderer and nothing can change that. Anyways, I think this name is a bit plain. I'm not really a fan of names that doesn't contain the letter "R". It's usually said that male names can only be strong if they contain the letter "R" and I think it's true. Also, it's so common, but it's not a bad thing if the name is common. This name is not bad, but it's also not great.
I'm Ukrainian and it's impossible for me to like this name. This was the name of a man who killed 7 million of my people!
Horrible. This name is ugly, and it was the name of Joseph Stalin, the monster that starved an entire nation in the most cynical and cruel way possible, and overall killed around 30 million innocent people. This name makes me shudder.
This name is not bad, but who would want to share his name with Stalin?
Despite the association with that demon Stalin, I still love this name. Yes, it was borne by one of the most evil, sadistic and brutal dictators to ever live, but it's a nice name anyway. I don't think that the name is ruined just because it was given to a monster.
I don't like the name.
This name is amazing!
Joe is an okay name I guess.
Greatest name out there! Describes a funny and cool guy! Jack is way too boring.
This was my stepfather's name, but I have never liked it. It's an old man's name. There is nothing pleasant about it. I don't like Biblical names in general. I especially hate the nickname Joe because it makes me think of Joe Blow or average Joe, who is nothing special by definition.
My name is Joseph and I like it. It is a name I am proud of. Because it is Jesus' father's name and a pharaoh's name.
A beautiful name.
I love the name Joseph and I am planning to have three sons named Dallas Joseph, Hudson Joseph and Joseph Hudson!
My older brother is named Joseph, one of the few popular names that I actually like, and he despises being called "Joe" or "Joey".
I love this name and I want to name my son Joseph after Joseph Joey Logano!
This is one of my all time favourite names. I find this name to be incredibly handsome, strong and masculine and also sophisticated without sounding too stuffy, and it's also one of those names that can fit any age and any person.
I don't think this name is bad for kids at all. I'm in middle school and my friend is named Joseph. It doesn't sound overly mature at all in my opinion. I think it's beautiful and I find the nickname Joe a bit tacky, to be honest. It just feels a bit too common or clichéd. (Is that the right word? I'm not sure.) But it's still a very nice name and I think it shouldn't matter what age the person is! :)
I've always thought this name was too boring. It's way too overused and sounds too biblical to use. And the nickname Joe is awful.
Too common for my liking. This name isn't bad, it just lacks flavour, if you know what I mean.
To me it feels more like an old man's name than a young man's or child's. Nothing wrong with this, but I'm just so used to hearing young guys called Joe or Joey that I can't imagine them going by Joseph. Other than that, it's not a bad name at all -- just too common for my liking.
I like this name actually. I picture a tan guy with greasy black hair.
I think this name is plain and overused, but I still like it. Definitely better than those made up and trendier names nowadays.
An ugly, overused name favored by sexist, homophobic Catholics, plus who would want to have the same middle name as that snobby hipster Nate Ruess?
This is one of my top five favorite names of all time! I have used this name for a novel character, who happens to pretty much be my favorite character that I have ever created. He is so much more like me than I ever would have expected...
Anyways, this name is such a neat name because it has been around since the beginning of time, basically, but it still has a modern, more edgy twist to it... you don't find too many given names that are that way. It is one of a small group of names that has maintained popularity throughout history and I think that that is really spectacular and really neat!
I always thought that Joseph, as well as it's nicknames, were the most overrated names that I've ever heard of. There I said it. Not saying I despise it though.
I love the name Joseph but prefer it as a middle name because I'm not really a fan of the nickname Joe. Genesis talks about Joseph and it is amazing. I believe Joseph is an absolutely beautiful picture of Christ.
An easily lovable name from first sight for me. "Joe" is a fine usable nickname. All the more reason to love "Joseph". =)
Couldn't "Seph" be a nickname for Joseph?
My little cousin's name is Joseph, he goes by Joey. I always love seeing little kids with classic names.
Very masculine name that ages well.
This is a good name, though I'm getting tired of hearing the nicknames "Joe" and "Joey". Why can't a guy named Joseph just go by Joseph? Please?
My sons name is Joseph and he was born in 2003 when this name was less common. He is named after his grandfather. What I like about the name Joseph is that nobody else my sons age (8 years) has the same name. He is the only Joseph in his class, and most likely the school. I think it is a nice, strong and traditional name.
Joseph is a very sweet name, despite being ENTIRELY too common and biblical. My boyfriend's name is Joseph, he goes by Joey or Joe. I really don't like either nickname, and I wish I could just call him Joseph. Joseph is a really nice name to say, it rolls off of your tongue, but Joey sounds kind of feminine and Joe sounds kind of dull.
In Unbreakable, this was Bruce Willis's adorable son (his son's name was JOSEPH, not JOEY or JOE) and I really thought it was adorable on a young kid.
In conclusion to my ramblings, I love Joseph, but I don't particularly care fir Joe or Joey.
I adore this name, but definitely common.
A very dignified-sounding (and dignified-looking) name in its entirety, and easy to picture on both a child and a senior. I like the nickname Joey, though definitely not the nickname Joe, which to me sounds like the name of a half-wit.
The list goes on and on of the famous bearers of this name, but my favorites would be Joseph Jonas of the Jonas Brothers and actor Joseph-Gordon Levitt. I wouldn't call my son this name because it is so common but it is a very handsome name.
Quite possibly my favorite boy's name. There is a dignity and strength with this name that I love, balanced with gentleness. It sounds wise and strong and caring and intelligent. There are enough famous Josephs, starting from Old Testament times to right now, to satisfy anyone. It is classic and even if it climbs to number one in the American popularity charts I would still use it for a son.
My brother's name, after my father, Jose. Joey, Joe, it's all been done and I'm sure he thinks it's just as boring.
I like this name a lot. I used to think it sounded dull and overused. But now, I have met some really nice guys with this name. I don't think it sounds good shortened to Joe or Joey. Yuck! But the name in it's full version is very nice and very old world.
I like the name Joseph a lot, however; I don't think I'd name my child Joseph because people would shorten it to Joe, and I wouldn't want my son to be "Just another average Joe".
The're nothing wrong with the name per se, but I always associate it with jerks. There's the evil man Joseph Jackson, the father of Michael Jackson, and the creepy Joseph Simpson, the father of Jessica Simpson. This is also the English equivalent of Josef, which was Stalin's first name.
I like this name, but it's way too common where I live, I prefer Giuseppe more.
Saying that this name isn't for little kids is just wrong! It can be for little kids and grown ups. I like this name, but it's too popular!
This name is really nice. It has a great background too. Plus when the kid is little you can call them Jojo or Joey (that's what I call my brother) and when he gets older Joseph or Joe.
I'm not exactly crazy about this name. It's way too common in my area. I know.
Joe B.
Joey C.
Joe W.
And many more.
I like this name when it's used for guys who aren't little kids: Joseph just isn't a little kid's name, Joe fits better. However, Joseph is a great guy's name, and it has very nice biblical references. (I'm not saying that all biblical names=GOOD, but the biblical Joseph's WERE good.) :)P.S. Also, Giuseppe is like the coolest name in the world, aside from Matteo/the other variant of Matthew that sounds like (muh TAY oosh)!
First off, I love the name Joseph - I plan to name my son Joseph. No disrespect is intended, but what exactly is God going to add?
