Taken from Garajonay, a Canarian place name of Guanche origin. According to a local legend, Gara 3 and Jonay were a pair of young Guanche lovers who died together in a joint suicide at Garajonay peak, the highest mountain on the Canarian island of La Gomera. The tale of Gara and Jonay was first recorded in 1924, and its authenticity has been called into question.
