One thing I’ve never really understood about names like this is that they’re family names. Johnson means “son of John”, “John” surely referring to the _first_ name of the individual who ‘started it off’ - therefore Johnson as a first name makes plenty of (if not more) sense as a first name rather than a surname; one of the reasons I like it. I am a layman when it comes to roots however, and this is just my 2 cents. Feel free to correct me on anything.
I definitely think that this variant of the name John is more unique and less common, plus it doesn't sound bad as a first name. I can just picture a strong and tall man with this name.
