Meaning & History

Said to mean "man-impelling, causing men to tremble" or "victorious from birth", possibly from Sanskrit जनिमन् (janiman) meaning "birth, origin" and जय (jaya) meaning "victory, conquest". This was the name of a celebrated king of Hastinapura in northern India, a grandson of Abhimanyu and great-grandson of Arjuna, who reigned during the Middle Vedic period (12th to 10th centuries BC). He appears as a figure in the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
