A lot of you are just racist and it shows. Thinking names are "bad" because they "sound poor" or "black" is ridiculous. There are valid arguments like it's too common, you don't like how it sounds, it's hard to spell, etc. But complaining that it's too black is INSANE. How is Janae annoying because it's common amongst black girls but you don't bat an eye at Ava, Theodore, Emily, etc. There are people with this name reading your comments, so dial it back and rethink what you say before you post it here. Then there's comments saying "well just give your kid a common name!" Which are the same commenters who LOVE Brexleigh and Bentley and Aurelia and Everly 🙄🙄.
Though I don't love the *tone* of a lot of these comments, it does reflect my real-life experience with it. Always when meeting someone, I'll get "wow that's a Black name though?" or if they'd heard of me before but haven't met me in person yet, "oh I thought you were Black."There's obviously nothing wrong inherently with an association with Black culture, but given the state of racial differences in the U.S., it's so freaking awkward to deal with every single time I meet someone. It puts me in a position where I have no good way to respond. Also, no one ever spells or pronounces it correctly. I've gone on several dates only to realize that the other person hasn't the slightest clue about what my name is or pronunciation. So many Forrest Gump jokes and "janaynay" jokes, too. As someone who has this name, don't saddle your kid with it. There are many easier names to live with.
Janae Johnson is an American writer, cultural worker, and DJ. She is the co-founder of poetry venues, The House Slam in Boston, and The Root Slam in the Bay Area.
I'm not into this name, it sounds like it's trying to be fake classy. Plus I know at least 8. It's the "Madison" of Black girl names.
This is a horrible name. Basic names like Ashley, Brittany, Courtney and Danielle will better get along with ppl and receive more employment opportunity. Not even spelling it Janee helps looks like u learned how to spell from MySpace.
Janae Bakken is an American television producer and screenwriter best known for her work on the television series Scrubs.
Janae is a wonderful alternative to Jane!
It isn't just a black girls name! It can be anyone's name. Indian, American, French, African, anywhere really!
I love this name they call me nae nae and I like the nickname. My name is Janae and I like what my parents chose for me but it is kinda weird when people say it in class, still like the name.
I really love this name, I think it is SO much better than Jane, this ages so well, and I would use this, I really love it! You guys STOP being RACIST here OKAY? I don't like that, this is NOT a BLACK NAME! Nae Nae is such a great nickname!
It's pretty, but not my favorite.
Not very attractive.
Jə-NAY.
I know it's a modern/creative name, but I really do like this name. It sounds like a spunkier version of Jenny in my opinion.
Also influenced by the spelling Danae.
A stereotypical black girls' name.
My name is JaNae'... my mother gave me the name in 1982, and had chosen it years prior to my birth. It was a pretty unique name in my small town and I did get some grief about it as a child. I have grown into it well, and am very happy with it. It is uncommon, but not unheard of... unique, while not being overtly strange.Nicknames:
Nae
Nae Nae.
This name is more often seen used among African-Americans rather than lighter skinnned\Caucasian females.
I honestly didn't have much of an opinion on this name until I met a girl named Janae in my last year of high school--now the name brings to mind a quiet, observant, but thoughtful girl wise beyond her years. It's a very sweet name.
Despite being a modern name, I kind of like Janae. However, I prefer Janee, since I knew a girl with that spelling.
Heh. I'm an author and I just named an elf this. I had no idea it was a real name.
Beautiful name! I have an aunt who has that name, she almost originated the name in the early 1960's.
I knew someone who spelled this like Janee.
Goodness no! Reminds me of Ja'Mie King, the spoilt brat from the Chris Lilley series "We Can Be Heroes".
I prefer the fancy spelling of JaNae'.
