I like this name, Irwin. It has a good sound, a nice meaning, not too common but people know how to spell it. I am a fan of the nickname Win, and this is a fine way to get there. Strong, wise, kind, and trustworthy. A negative association would be that animal-disturber Steve Irwin, but my opinion of him somewhat improved after seeing him sing and dance with the Wiggles. Plus, all that was a while ago and it has faded I feel.
This name sounds almost like some type of great-grandfather name nowadays, and I would question the sanity, as well as the taste, of parents who named their son Irwin today. It has that long schwa sound and everything, and it sounds quite geeky. The really hilarious thing is that some Finnish rock singer or whatever chose the stage name Irwin Goodman for himself. He just couldn't pick a cool first name and a cool surname, now could he? At least he tormented people with his ''music'' before I came into this world, in 1985, for what it's worth, but sheesh, the name already sounded dated back then! This name must always have sounded middle-aged, even on little kids.
"I would question the sanity, as well as the taste, of parents who named their son Irwin today. It has that long schwa sound and everything, and it sounds quite geeky". In response to this ridiculous comment I would like to say that I was given the name Irwin at birth. It has an extremely long history in my family & I have to say I'm proud and honored to have been given it to carry on that ancestral history. I hate to burst your egotistical bubble, Mr./Ms. Slight night shiver, but my parents were quite sane when they passed that heritage down to me. Yes, I agree that in present times superficial people like yourself find an uncontrollable temptation to make irrational, judgmental statements about other people based on a name, yet I appreciate my ancestral make up, and I am proud to honor every Irwin that came before me. No, it's not a popular name in modern times, but that's what makes it unique. I'd much rather be a one in ten million Irwin's than a one in five Steve. Sir/Ma'am, based on your comments I am left with only one option - to question your sanity. Furthermore, I'm far from "geeky". I'm just a dude named Irwin that's trying to make a living like everyone else. Peace✌.
