Another prominent mythological bearer of this name was Iphis, a character in Ovid's epic poem Metamorphoses. Iphis, born female, was raised as a boy because her parents could not afford a dowry for a daughter, and was later physically changed into a male by the goddess Isis, to allow him to marry his female beloved, Ianthe.
