Welsh pronunciation: https://forvo.com/word/idris/
The name Idris was given to 138 boys born in the US in 2015.
Without disputing the Welsh source, Idris is also an Arabic name, q.v., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idris_(prophet), and, since the debut of The Wire, a shortening of a somewhat famous Idrissa, q.v., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idris_Elba. It might be as well to mention both so as not to confuse people who look it up. [noted -ed]
Not sure whether this actually falls into the category of "useful information", but Idris was the name of a *female* character who played a small but important role in the sixth series of the new Doctor Who. Just thought that should be out there since a), there are a lot of Whovians, b), there are not a lot of Welsh mythology enthusiasts, so c), before naming your boy Idris, you may want to reconsider.
@lizagirlWhy should anyone have to reconsider what they want to name their son just because of a tv series? If a Whovian has any respect THEY would be the ones reconsidering what they name their daughter. It clearly lists this name as male, BBC probably wasn't concerned with that at the time when they labeled the TARDIS Idris. But this name is fundamentally for men, end of story.
In the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, this is not used as a name for a person, but a country.
Actor Idris Elba is a famous bearer.
Idris is also the Arabic name of the prophet known in the bible as Enoch.
Pronounced ID-ris.
It is the name of a Welsh Giant from mythology. The name was given to a mountain range "Cadre Idris'. The story goes if you spend a night on the mountain (Seat - in translation) you will return a madman or a genius. It is also the name of two prophets in the Holy Koran.
Idris is the Welsh for Arthur, for example "Cadar Idris" is translated into Arthur's chair or seat, a rock on which Arthur is supposed to have sat on in North Wales.
It is actually "Cader Idris", which is why the school nearby is called "Ysgol Y Gader" or School Of Chair. Idris is a wonderful name, full of Welsh pride.
My school is close to Cader Idris, but not as close as Gader.
