Ianto Evans is a Welsh-American applied ecologist, landscape architect, inventor, writer, social critic, and teacher. He is known for his work building, writing and teaching about natural building, cob and high-efficiency solid-fuel stoves, ovens and heaters.
I have been absolutely in love with this name since I began watching Torchwood. I plan on naming my first child Ianto. In the U.S. it should be pretty unique and I love the character which I would have named him after. I guess it's not the best thing to be naming your child after a Sci-Fi character but oh well, I'm sure he won't mind.
Correctly pronounced YAN-toh by Welsh speakers. Not YAN-toe, definitely not Ee-yan-toe.The one thing I hate about Torchwood is their excessive mispronunciation of Welsh names. =(
TOH isn't necessarily the same as toe. For my Welsh family, the vowel in toh is somewhere between toe and tah, and it's a bit shorter than toe.I think I remember Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) saying this correctly on Torchwood a few times (ie. Yan-toh). Gareth David Lloyd seems to round the o quite a bit more. Not sure what that says about the pronunciation, as they are both Welsh, but at least neither of them say ee-yan-toe.
