Meaning & History

Means "caring for horses” in Greek, borrowed from Sanskrit वितस्ता (vitasta), itself borrowed from Old Persian *Vidāspa-, literally “caring for horses”, from *vīd- “to take care of”, and 𐎠𐎿𐎱 “horse”. In Greek mythology, Hydaspes was a Pentapotamia river god with an extraordinary swift stream that flows into the Saronitic Syrtis.
