Meaning & History
The meaning and origin of the first element in this Germanic name is rather uncertain, and so there are various possibilities to the name's meaning. The most likely possibility is that the first element refers to the Huns, who derive their name from Germanic hûn "giant." Other possibilities are Old Norse hûnn "bear cub" and Celtic kuno "high." It's also possible that the first element is a blend of hûn with Gothic kuni "family, kin, race, kind" (see Kunibert). The second element in the name comes from Germanic rîcja "powerful, strong, mighty." The second element is also closely related to Celtic rîg or rix and Gothic reiks, which all mean "king, ruler." Huneric was a 5th-century king of the Vandals, a Germanic tribe.
