From Ancient Greek ἵππος (hippos) "horse" with -ίας (-ias), a male name suffix. This was the name of the last tyrant of Athens, ruling during the 5th-century BCE. This was also the name of a 5th-century BCE Greek sophist, and a contemporary of Socrates.
