Meaning & History
Derived from Ancient Greek ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse" combined with the masculine name suffix -ίας (-ias). This was the name of the last tyrant of Athens, ruling during the 5th century BCE. This was also the name of a 5th-century BCE Greek sophist, a contemporary of Socrates whom Plato characterizes as vain and arrogant in his dialogues Hippias Minor and Hippias Major.
