You can make a lot of jokes about the word sounding identical to "hilarious", and you can be bullied for that. Also, the name doesn't look right and the pronunciation is a copy of the word "hilarious", which doesn't sound pleasant on the ears.
This is the Latin root for the word hilarious, it’s not actually hilarious. It was very common back then before English formed our general, modern language.
For the doubters posting here, there are currently about 500 people with the last name Hilarius. In mostly recent history the name was from a family in the Netherlands (Holland or Friesland). I have this name, and there are 4 of us in Canada. Biggest number are in Indonesia, being descendants of Dutch immigrants. A fair number are in S. Africa, and generally around Europe.
Hilarius-hiiri (Hilarius the mouse) is a mouse character from a Finnish children's programme created in the mid-90's. This name is considered archaic in Finland, though it has been (rarely) used through the 20th and 21st centuries.

I highly doubt anyone uses this anymore. Like that earlier person said, "My name is Hilarius!" Just wouldn't work.
My great grandmother Maria's brother's name Hilarius. Obviously they had no idea in Germany that this was an English word meaning funny. Apparently, when my great grandmother found out, she laughed so hard she collapsed and couldn't breathe (not in a serious way, it was just really funny).
If you really like this name, and you have a daughter, name her the feminine, Hilary.

This name makes me grin. So much. "What's your name?" "My name's Hilarius." "OK, what is it?" "My name's Hilarius!" "I get that, but what do people call you?" "HILARIUS!" "...Oooohhh..." Pause. *Snicker*. "You're right. Your name IS hilarious." I'm sorry, I just had to comment on that. I think whoever has this name must have a very good sense of humor. No pun intended.
Huh? It's a name. I've never met anyone with this name before. No, Hilarius as a name just doesn't look right. Well, that's in my opinion, but what do you think?

Sweet name, but alas...the word is already in use.
