Meaning & History
Means "sacred custom", derived from the Greek adjective ἱερός (hieros) meaning "sacred" combined with the Greek noun νόμος (nomos) meaning "usage, custom, law, ordinance" (see Eunomia). In ancient Greece, ἱερονόμος (hieronomos) was also a term used to signify a temple-warden or a magistrate tasked with upholding the people's observance of religious laws. This name is frequently confused with the related name Hieronymos (see Jerome), which is very similar in appearance but has a different meaning.
