Meaning & History
Means "horse finder", derived from Greek εὑρίσκειν (heuriskein) meaning "to find; find out, discover; get, gain, procure" and ἵππος (hippos) meaning "horse". This was an epithet of the Greek goddess Artemis at Pheneus in Arcadia. According to the 2nd-century Greek geographer and travel writer Pausanias: 'The legend is that Odysseus lost his mares, traversed Greece in search of them, and on the site in the land of Pheneus where he found his mares founded a sanctuary of Artemis, calling the goddess Horse-finder…'
