Meaning & History
Derived from the name of the Greek messenger god Hermes combined with the Greek noun λόχος (lochos) meaning "ambush", a word that later came to signify a tactical sub unit of the ancient Greek army. The word is ultimately derived from the Greek verb λοχάω (lochao) meaning "to lie in wait for, to waylay" as well as "to snare".
