Meaning & History

A Roman family name of uncertain etymology. It could be an Oscan personal name, probably related to 𐌇𐌄𐌓𐌉𐌉𐌀𐌃 (heriiad) “he wants”, from Proto-Italic *herjō “to wish, want”, probably influenced by Etruscan. Herennius Senecio ( -93) was among the Stoic Opposition to the emperor Domitian, under whose rule he was executed.
