Meaning & History

Possibly derived from Egyptian ḥnwt meaning "mistress, lady" and mḥyt meaning "north wind", as well as referring to the goddess Mehyt. This was the name of a priestess who lived in Thebes during the 19th dynasty (c. 1250 BCE). Her gilded coffins are now on display at the British Museum in London.
