Helmut Jahn is a German-American architect, well known for designs such as the US$800 million Sony Center on the Potsdamer Platz, Berlin, the Messeturm in Frankfurt and the One Liberty Place, formerly the tallest building in Philadelphia, and Suvarnabhumi Airport, an international airport in Bangkok, Thailand.
It is a contraction of two words: held which means hero in German and mut (muth is ancient form) which means courage. Therefore, taken together it means "courageous hero" or "heroic courage". My 1941 German birth certificate shows Helmut (Helmuth) as does my first Canadian passport.
The comments under the name Helmut are pretty harsh! I don't think the name Helmut is ugly. In fact, I really DON'T think it's THAT BAD. I like this name. It's cool, it's different and I think it's NICE. :-)

Yuck. This name is ugly, violent, and old-fashioned. It sounds too close to the word "helmet" for me to think it should be a name.
Also was the name of the head of IT at my high school.. he is now in prison for sleeping with a student in my year.
