Haruka was last year's most popular girl name in Japan in terms of sound (Aoi {葵} was the most popular in terms of both the kanji and the combination of kanji/kana & sound).For boys, in terms of sound, it's in 188th place.Rankings for Haruka based on kanji/kana & sound combination: 遥 - 9th place (girls) & 456th place (boys) -> 78th (girls) & 1, 209th (boys) in 1989 遥香 - 71st place (girls) -> 276th (girls) in 1989 はるか - 100th place (girls) -> 124th (girls) in 1989 晴香 - 115th place (girls) -> 67th (girls) in 1989 春香 - 130th place (girls) -> 71st (girls) in 1989 遙 - 173rd place (girls) -> 203rd (girls) in 1989 陽香 - 234th place (girls) -> 205th (girls) in 1989 春花 - 301st place (girls) -> 512th (girls) in 1989 悠 - 319th place (girls) & 575th place (boys) -> 156th (girls) in 1989* 遥花 - 324th place (girls) -> 6, 355th (girls) in 1989 陽花 - 424th place (girls) -> 3, 962nd (girls) in 1989 遙香 - 709th place (girls) -> 572nd (girls) in 1989 遥佳 - 860th place (girls) -> 1, 795th (girls) in 1989 晴花 - 916th place (girls) -> 2, 930th (girls) in 1989 遥華 - 968th place (girls) -> 4, 565th (girls) in 1989 春佳 - 971th place (girls) -> 461st (girls) in 1989 春華 - 1000th place (girls) -> 1, 128th (girls) in 1989Source: http://5go.biz/sei/ (2014) & www.namaejiten.com (1989)*I didn't put up the ranking for boys since the kanji used is more often used as Yū.
Let me also add that there are 2 surveys conducted by Benesse and Meiji Yasuda Life every year to determine which name was the most popular. In terms of sound, Benesse puts Haruka (girl) at 17th place while Meiji Yasuda Life puts Haruka (girl) at 16th. Since Japan doesn't have an official popularity list, the data that I put up on BTN should not be used as pure evidence of which names are currently popular.
As noted above, the civilian form of Sailoruranus from Takeuchi Naoko's Sailormoon is Tenou Haruka; (surnames presented first per custom). This character is known as Amara Tenoh in the English dub and was made the cousin of Michelle Kaioh (Kaiou Michiru aka Sailorneptune); they were actually lovers. The final season (Stars) was not dubbed partially because the North American studios couldn't figure out what to do to hide their obviously romantic involvement (they die reaching for each other!) and also, the Starlights who alternated between male and female. Gender freaks us out over here for some reason...Haruka's gender identity never was really clarified... because of this, I see this name as more masculine but I like it in general!
