Meaning & History
From Guanche ⴰⵐⴰⵓⴰ (añawa), derived (through palatalisation) from aniawa, from *ha-nya-wa "this one is melody". This was the name of the wife of Bencomo, a 15th-century mencey (aboriginal Guanche leader) of the kingdom of Taoro on the island of Tenerife. A variant, Aniagua, was borne by the wife of Guadarfia, a king of the island of Lanzarote.
