Meaning & History
The meaning and origin of the first element of this Germanic name is very uncertain - at least five possible meanings exist. We know that it comes from hag, but we don't know where hag itself comes from. It may come from Old High German hac "city, town, hedge" or from haga "to put together" or from Old High German hagan "to please" or "enclosure." Other possibilities are: Old Norse hagr "utility, advantage, profit, gain" - or the adjective hagr, which means "right" (as in 'your right arm, the door on the right,' etc.) or "useful." The second element of this name is derived from Old High German bald "bold, brave."
