Meaning & History
Derived from the Lithuanian verb guosti meaning "to comfort, to console". Also compare the related verb guostis meaning "to complain" as well as "to console oneself".Guostė is also the name of a river in Lithuania (which most likely also takes its name from the aforementioned guosti), which is located near the village of Stakliškės in the county of Kaunas and is a tributary of the river Verknė. The river Guostė ends in a lake called Guostus, which appears to have been named after the river and therefore its name has the same etymological origin. All in all, one must take into account the possibility that some Lithuanian parents may have been inspired to name their daughter after the river or the lake, rather than directly after guosti and the connotation of feminine gentleness that it appears to carry.
