Meaning & History
Latinization of the Germanic name Gummar, of which the first element is either gumô meaning "man" or gunda meaning "battle, war" (compare Gundemar). In addition to these, one source also connects the first element to got meaning "god" and guot meaning "good". The second element of the name consists of mari meaning "famous".This name was notably borne by a Frankish saint from the 8th century AD. He lived near what is now the city of Lier in Flanders (Belgium) and is also the patron saint of that city.
