From the English word goodwill, derived from Middle English gode meaning "good" and will "wish, will, volition", which was originally a nickname applied to an amiable person with a favourable disposition towards others. This is the name of a character in the allegorical novel The Pilgrim's Progress (1678) by John Bunyan. A notable bearer was Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu (1948-2021), the King of the Zulu nation in Southern Africa from 1968 until his death in 2021.
