Meaning & History
Derived from medieval Georgian გლახაკ (glakhak), which in feudal Georgia was a term for a free man who had resorted to begging after having broken off relations with his feudal lord (whose land he had previously been forced to cultivate). As such, the term eventually became synonymous with "beggar".Georgian given names with this type of negative meaning are pagan in origin, because their use originated from pagan superstitions.
