Meaning & History
Derived from the name of the lake Gjende in Innlandet county, Norway. The name of the lake is taken from Old Norse gandr meaning "staff, stick". A notable bearer is Gjendine Slålien (1871-1972), a Norwegian shepherdess whose singing inspired Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. She was born in Gjendebu, a cabin located next to lake Gjende.
