I personally really like this name! I find it unique and pleasing to the eye and ear. I like the nickname possibilities too: Gill, Gilly, Roy... All around, great name in my opinion.
My grandmother was a Gilroy. Goilla Ruadh means Red Warrior and is an alternative interpretation of the name more in keeping with our family's independent tradition. Be wary of potted diminutions in favor of Celtic and Anglo domination of the historical record. The Gilroys predate the lot and have more in common with the Cruthin, the Dalcassians and the Dal Raida than any Celtic or Danish tribe.
This name reminds me of Gilderoy Lockhart - A "narcissistic wizarding celebrity who has written many books on his fabulous adventures encountering dark creatures" from Harry Potter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilderoy_Lockhart#Gilderoy_Lockhart), who is in actuality a fraud and a coward - Not an association I would want to have with my child's name!

But his name was spelled as Gilderoy, not Gilroy.

There's a town by the name of Gilroy in California. It's known for the garlic grown in the surrounding areas.
