Roman cognomen which was derived from the Latin adjective gentilis meaning "of the same family" (see Gentilis).A notable bearer of this name was the Roman Neoplatonist philosopher Amelius Gentilianus (3rd century AD). Due to his close association and work with Greek philosophers, he is also known under the hellenized form of his name, namely Ἀμέλιος Γεντιλιανός (Amelios Gentilianos).
