Meaning & History
The first element of this name is either derived from the Lithuanian verb gaudyti meaning "to take" as well as "to catch, to hunt" or from the Lithuanian adjective gaudus meaning "sonorous, resonant, ringing, loud, echoing". The second element is derived from Baltic vyd meaning "to see" (see Vytautas). Also compare other names that end in -vydas, such as Alvydas and Tautvydas.
