Meaning & History
Possibly derived from Old English frēa, a poetic word meaning "lord, king" (from the Germanic root *fraujô), combined with Old English waru meaning "shelter, protection, care". In the 8th-century epic poem Beowulf this is the name of a Danish princess, whose marriage to Ingeld is unsuccessful in ending the feud between him and her father, Hroðgar.
