The reason why your friends resort to calling you by this nickname whether you want them to or not is because they are too lazy to spell Francesca or Francine.

Francesca, Francisco, Francisca etc. Are all such beautiful names that it seems a shame to use a nickname as hideous as Fran.

I don’t like this as a male’s name or nickname. It’s very gentle and delicate, for girls only.
Francine Joy "Fran" Drescher is an American film and television comedian, model, actress, producer, ordained Universal Life Church minister, and activist. She is best known for her role as Fran Fine in the hit TV series The Nanny, and for her nasal voice and thick New York accent.
In response to what CharlieRob and Surreal said, Francesca and Francine are variants of Frances in different languages, so of course the name could be short for those names. I believe that only Frances is listed because it is the English version of the name, and this site is written in the English language.
A famous bearer is the actress Fran Drescher (born Francine Joy Drescher on September 30, 1957.) She was the star of "The Nanny" and "Living With Fran."
