Faustus, or Faust (depending on the langauge), is the name of the character of a scientist who sells his soul to the Devil in order to unveil the secrets of the world to satisfy his thirst of knowledge. Different variations of his story have been told and retold by numerous famous authors, such as Christopher Marlowe, Goethe, and Thomas Mann.
