Meaning & History

Derived from the Latin noun fama meaning "fame" combined with the Latin suffix -ianus.

A notable bearer of this name was the Frankish saint Famianus of Compostela (1090-1150), who was born as Gerhard (some say Gebhard) or Wardo in what is now the city of Cologne in Germany. He is also called saint Famianus of Gallese, after the Italian town where he died.
