Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Εὔρυτος (Eurytos) which may have been derived from εὖ (eu) "well" and ἐρύω (eruô) or (eryô) "to draw, drag, pull", perhaps with the implied meaning "drawer of the bow". This was the name of numerous characters in Greek mythology, including a king of Oechalia who was the father of Iole and Iphitus. He was a celebrated archer, and in some versions of the legends he challenged Apollo to a contest and was slain by the god for his hubris. The bow of Eurytus passed to his son, who later gave it to Odysseus.
