Meaning & History
From the Greek adjective εὔγνωστος (eugnostos) meaning "well-known", a word formed of the elements εὖ (eu) "good" and γνωστός (gnostos) "known, familiar". Eugnostos the Blessed was the author of the Epistle of Eugnostos (ca. late 1st century), a Gnostic epistle found in Codices III and V of the Nag Hammadi library.
