I am really surprised by these comments. I think Ethan is a nice name. It is strong, it ages well, and it has a good meaning. It is simple and straightforward which makes it easy to read and pronounce, and it doesn't need a nickname. It also flows with many potential middle names, such as James, Isaac, and River. Overall, I think Ethan is a nice, solid name.
I LOVE this name. My future son's name is Ethan, I have only met one Ethan, and I honestly don't hear it much, there is nothing to not like about the name, it's fun to say and write.
I don't like this name. It's too weird and unusual. Reminds me of ether. I don't care for first names that start with a vowel or last names that end with one.

I never liked the name. Contrary to the Hebrew meaning, it sounds very puny, no?
This name is reserved for royalty and Greek gods. It is a shame - nay, a travesty, to see this name being wasted on the new generation, who are truly unworthy to bear its burden.
I didn't like Ethan when I first heard it but it's grown on me and I love it. It's modern and cute. It's getting pretty popular! I have a nephew named Ethan, we call him Eth a lot.
I agree DeeDeeRee, I don't like it. Especially on the polls Ethan is always winning, which is weird. I am taking Ethan off my polls, because people like it too much.
Yes it's an Old Testament name but there are better Old Testament alternatives, don't understand the appeal of this name and its popularity - I've seen more negative responses than positive responses to this name.

Reminds me of a brat... not a fan at all.

I have a really good friend named Ethan. Love the name!
My 25 year old son is Ethan. Again a name that suits him. Back when he was born it was not that popular and he was the only Ethan in his year at school. Came across the name in a TV series called Paradise, Ethan Allen Cord played by Lee Horsley. Decided on Ethan as originally thought of Nathan, but was too popular.Blessed to have two children with names that, at the time, were slightly different but not too way out that they would want to change them.
My brother's name is Ethan and he’s very annoying. I know another Ethan and he’s kind of annoying too. I do not recommend naming your kid Ethan because then they’ll turn out to not be nice and will be annoying and rude, so yeah, that’s just my opinion but you can choose.
All the Ethans I have met/heard of are all jerks (except one). No one really likes them and I don't think that they are very... smart. Me and my friends call Ethan "The Devil's Name" because most Ethan's are devils.
This name is very popular right now, and I have no idea why.

Because it's a great name, that's why!

My mom used to work with an Ethan. He looked like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, except with a pocket protector. Coke bottle glasses. Balding. Tarter teeth. A white Urkle. That image is what gets conjured up every time I think of the name Ethan. I can’t relate to the people who think Ethan is surfer dude cool or mountain man strong at all.

This name fits our son Ethan Timothy perfectly! I don’t feel it’s as common as it appears to be since he’s never had another Ethan in his classroom.

Ethan is amazing- it's the best name in the world.
This is my name :). I was born in 1985 and all the way until 2010 I thought I was the only one. I like my name, and am proud that there appears to be a growing following.
I know everyone will hate me, but I don't really like it that much. Every Ethan I have known was wimpy and not very nice.

Who cares if Ethan is a popular name. It's a great name, that's why it's popular. I know a few little boys named Ethan and they are adorable, sweet, funny, smart and outgoing.

I know 6 Ethans. It's a great name, but way too popular.

This name is still popular after many years for a good reason. It's a strong name and works for a boy or grown man. I love this name. It's not pretentious, it has a great meaning and history, and works for someone smart and easy going.

I wouldn't dislike this name as much as I do if I didn't hear it everywhere. Like, everywhere, on every other baby boy I meet. I'm not even sure why it's so popular; it's not a bad name, but I think I need someone to explain the appeal to me.
I love this name and it's meaning - strong and enduring.

Ethan is a short and sweet biblical name. I love the name Ethan because of a past experience with one but it's my second or first favorite boy name. I'm conflicted with Alexander, another boy name that I'm conflicted with is Theo. I'm not sure if I want just Theo or Theodore.
One of my favorite boy names, even though it's always at the top of the popularity charts. Strong; Biblical; easy to spell and pronounce; good for all ages 1 to 100 years. Another plus: it has (and needs) no nickname, which is great if you want your son to be called by his complete name. Similar names would be Adam, Luke, George, Isaac, Aaron, Colin, Simon, Justin, Caleb.
A cool, cute name. (^^)b It's perfect sounding! ♡ ☺.

Ethan is an OK name, nothing I would use. It sounds to boring and it's too common! It also hardly goes with a middle name. If you like "AN" ending boys names use Evan, not Ethan.
I used to really like this name: Cute on a boy, intelligent on an adolescent, mysterious on an adult, and it remains quite handsome throughout the years. Now I don't know what to think. I read Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton, and though it was very well written I despised Ethan's character. He was stupid and wrong in so many ways. So now this name has been tainted by that association. I really ought to get over myself, though. It's such a good name.
Makes me think of 'Ethan Frome.' It's okay, but the character is a bit of a wuss.

It would be a pretty decent name if it wasn't so insanely popular. Name your son Ethan nowadays, and I can guaranty you he'll meet at least two other boys with his name.
To be blatantly honest: I cannot stand the name. It has the air of something that very artsy parents would choose... an observation that I do not think is half off (but as always, there are the odd exceptions). Do I necessarily hate the ones who bear it? Negative-- don't be silly. I simply find it... an unattractive, unusable, tacky name. And for the record-- that opinion is based off of my US American ears at the general public who bears it, and sound... Perhaps if you are Hebrew, it may work.
Ever since Ethan appeared as the cold-blooded "Other" on LOST, whenever I hear the the name I think of someone evil and conniving. Losties would refrain from using this name.
I really like this name a lot! Glad it's in its "reign". By "reign", I mean that the name stayed popular for several years. It might last until a few more years, when I assume the popularity will fall.
I love this name, and I always will. It doesn't matter if everyone in the world was named Ethan. If you like the name like I do that's what is the important thing.

Ethan has been my ultimate favorite boy's name for the last 5 years or so. I've still got a while until I even want to think about children, but I'm convinced this will be my future son's name. It's everything I want in a boy's name, it's strong yet gentle, intellectual, but not too pretentious, and it's traditional but not too common (up until recently which makes me very upset). I do agree that it sounds a little bit whiny as child's name, but as both a teenager's name and a man's name, I think it's gorgeous. I find it goes really well with a lot of different middle names too.
I really like the name Ethan. It's a nice, masculine name, and it's not too 'out there' (though I sometimes prefer the odd names). I've seen it spelled 'Ethyn'. To each their own, I guess.
I usually dislike names with the ''th'' sound, and I hate the names Keith and Heath, but Ethan sounds very pleasant to me. I would never use a Biblcal name, and the name is hideously common and popular, but like Aidan, Connor, and Tristan, this is one of the GOOD popular names in America right now.
I used to love the name Ethan, before it got very popular again. I like that strong long vowel sound followed by the soft "th" phoneme. Now I am tired of hearing the name Ethan on little boys. I would be intrigued if I met a grown man with the name, though.
This name is sooo annoying. It sounds like you're whining when you say it. This name along with Jack, Aidan, and Liam are the most annoying names I've ever heard of.
My son's name. When he was born (1995) it was not particularly in fashion, about #50. People would often mistake his name for Ian, Nathan or Steven. Now it's everywhere. I think it sounds masculine, not wispy. He likes his name fairly well, though when he was younger he wanted to be called Christopher or Nicholas.
Oh, good Lord, don't name your boy Ethan, whatever you do! It's horrible! It sounds fey and frou frou beyond belief. If you want your son to get beat up at school and end up working in a women's hair salon, then name him Ethan.
I quite like this name. It has a very soft, sensitive sound, which gives it a great masculine quality. It's meaning is also appealing to me. It makes me think of a really nice guy who is honest and loyal. It is a bit of a shame that it's gotten so popular over the years, but that still doesn't deter me from liking it. I never tire of hearing mothers calling for their young sons named Ethan!
I really like this name! Since it has the meaning of Solid and Enduring, Strong and Firm that's what the name makes me think of. I think it's a wonderful name!
This name has really grown on me. It is very masculine sounding and makes me think of a smart man.

Not a bad name but I have no idea why it's so become so popular. It's rather lispy sounding in my opinion.

This is my little brother's name (he was born in 2004, it's the *fifth* most popular name that year, and it was supposed to be Owen or Emmet anyway, grr). We went to the library for a kids' story time, and 4 of the 5 boys there were named Ethan.Nobody calls him by his name, anyway, though. His mom calls him Junior and I call him E.T. or Andy. I guess kids with common names have to forge their own characters instead of living up to their names?
