Meaning & History
Means "the one who is tortured by love" or "chosen by love", from Greek ἔρως (erôs) "love" (genitive ἔρωτος (erôtos); see Eros) and κριτός (kritos) "separated, picked out, chosen". This is the name of the title character of a poem written by Vitsentzos Kornaros in early 17th-century Crete. 'Erotokritos' is a classic example of Greek Renaissance literature and is considered one of the most important works of Cretan literature.
