Erle Stanley Gardner, best-selling American author of the 20th century and the creator of the iconic lawyer character Perry Mason. He was originally a defense lawyer who helped immigrants in California, but turned to writing and found success in writing legal thrillers and fair-play mysteries with such characters as Mason, D.A. Doug Selby, and private detectives Cool and Lam. In his best years in the 30s, he wrote 2,000,000 words a year, and he wrote a total of about 80 Perry Mason books.
