Derived from the Greek noun ἔργον (ergon) meaning "work, task, deed" combined with the Greek noun τέλος (telos) meaning "purpose, aim, goal" as well as "completion, accomplishment, fulfillment" (see Aristotle).A known bearer of this name was the Olympic runner Ergoteles of Himera (5th century BC), who was originally from the island of Crete.
