Derived from the Greek adjective ἐρευθαλέος (ereuthaleos) meaning "reddish, ruddy", which is ultimately derived from the Greek noun ἔρευθος (ereuthos) meaning "redness, flush". Also compare the Greek verb ἐρεύθω (ereutho) "to make red, to stain with red" and the Greek adjective ἐρυθρός (eruthros) or (erythros) meaning "red".
