Meaning & History
Derived from Greek ἐπί (epi) meaning "upon, on" combined with Greek στρόφος (strophos) meaning "twisted band, twisted cord" as well as "rope". The latter element is etymologically related to the Greek verb στροφάω (strophao) meaning "to turn hither and thither" as well as "to rotate, to twist". Also compare the Greek verb στρέφω (strepho) meaning "to turn (around), to direct" and the English word catastrophe.
