My name is Emani, I agree with the African American usage as I am African American :), I recently learned that it is also used as a Punjabi surname, pretty cool. Mine is pronounced in the same way as Imani and has the same meaning. It means faith in Swahili and is derived from Iman in the Quran. My parents are African American and my dad is Muslim, he wanted to name me Imani as a derivative of Iman and my Mom wanted my name to be unique so she spelled it with an E instead of an I.
Referring to my previous comment about a (semi-)famous bearer:Emani's usage is labeled on here as African-American, but "Midsomer Murders" is a British TV show. Also, the similar transcription Eman is distinctly Egyptian (which goes with the character's sister, Faiza). But... their surname is Jindal, which is Punjabi (common in India and Pakistan).I am further confused about the usage of Emani.
