The name is comprised of two parts. The first, אל ('el), is a form of אלהים ('elohim), meaning "God". The second, זבד (zabad), means "to give". Together, the two parts are said to mean "God has given".

In the Bible, there are two people named Elzabad. The first, in 1 Chronicles 12:12, is the ninth of Gad's captains.

The second, in 1 Chronicles 26:7, is a Levite gatekeeper. He is the son of Shemaiah and Obed-Edom and the brother of Othni, Rephael, and Obed.
