Meaning & History
Elul is the twelfth month of the Jewish civil year and the sixth month of the ecclesiastical year on the Hebrew calendar, usually coinciding with parts of August and September. The meaning is uncertain: it could derive from the Akkadian Elūlu meaning "harvest" or the Aramaic root for "to search" or also from an acronym for the Hebrew phrase Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li that means "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine".
