Meaning & History
The first element of this name is a little bit uncertain. The Greek noun δῶρον (doron) meaning "gift" is the most obvious candidate, but it is also possible that the first element is connected to the Greek tribe of the Dorians in some way, such as via the Greek adjective Δωρικός (Dorikos) meaning "Dorian, Doric" (also compare Doris). The etymology of their ethnonym is uncertain, though scholars have been able to propose several theories for it.The second element of this name consists of Greek ξένος (xenos) meaning "foreign, strange" as well as "foreigner, guest". As such, the meaning of this name could be something along the lines of "gift of a guest" or "Dorian guest".
